Min Zhang
Deputy Director of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, School of Population Medicine and Public Health, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences

Dr. Min Zhang currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the School of Population Medicine and Public Health, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS)/Peking Union Medical College (PUMC). She is also the Vice Chair of the Occupational Health Standards Committee of the National Health Standards Commission of the People's Republic of China.

With over 30 years of experience in occupational safety and health, Dr. Zhang is a leading expert in the field in China. Her extensive professional background spans occupational health policy, standards, epidemiology, health worker protection, and the diagnosis of occupational diseases.

1.As a principal investigator or co-principal investigator, she has completed numerous multidisciplinary research projects funded by national and international organizations.

2.Through evidence-based research, Dr. Zhang has significantly contributed to national legislation and policymaking in occupational health.

3.She has led the development of over ten National Occupational Health Standards, which have been issued by the China National Health Standards Commission.

4.Dr. Zhang has conducted systematic studies on international occupational health standards. She played a key role in developing the ILO-led “ List of Occupational Diseases (revised 2010)”, and “Diagnostic and exposure criteria for occupational diseases. Guidance notes for diagnosis and prevention of the diseases in the ILO List of Occupational Diseases (revised 2010)”. She also contributed to the WHO-led “Global Occupational Disease ICD-11”.

5.She has translated and applied numerous international tools into Chinese, including the ILO Ergonomic Checkpoints (2nd edition) in 2013, the ILO/WHO HealthWISE Action Manual and Trainers’ Guide in 2015, and the ILO/WHO Ergonomic Checkpoints in Agriculture in 2015.

6.Over the past decade, Dr. Zhang has focused particularly on the occupational health of healthcare workers. Her research has been instrumental in shaping national policies for preventing and controlling bloodborne pathogens, workplace violence, and COVID-19. Her article "Protecting healthcare workers in China during the coronavirus outbreak" was published in the BMJ on February 14, 2020, one of the earliest articles on this issue globally. She also contributed to the WHO-ILO Interim Guidance “COVID-19: Occupational health and safety for health workers”, and the WHO-ILO guidance "Caring for those who care: guide for the development and implementation of occupational health and safety programmes for health workers."

7.As the first or corresponding author, Dr. Zhang has published more than 100 papers in Chinese and English scientific journals and over 20 books since 2000. She authored the ILO’s international technical guideline "National System for Recording and Notification of Occupational Diseases: Practical Guide" in 2013.

8.Dr. Zhang has received seven national awards for her scientific and technological achievements.
